Farm To Market Primer

Austin summers bring crazy high temperatures, devastating our hairstyles and elevating our electric bills. BUT those sunshiney days yield love-filled crops around these parts, blessing us with the availability of local, farm fresh produce and artisan food goods. The wintertime, though thankfully much more mild mannered, aids its temperament to a different sort of produce production. As Austinites we must take advantage of these fleeting “winter” months and consume the seasonal farm to market ingredients while they’    ... read more

A Uniquely Fresh and Authentic Mexican Dining Experience

El Mesón is one of Austin’s most appreciated interior Mexican food restaurants. With an original location on Burleson Road and another on South Lamar, El Mesón has elevated the standards for the casual Latin-inspired dining experience since the early 2000s.

Inside of the modest South Lamar location, ceilings and walls are appareled with festive flags strung across the room. Frontera Fest 2012

Hyde Park Theater has pioneered many movements in Austin, including spearheading what the Austin American Statesman calls “The fringe theater event of the Southwest!” And what is “fringe” theater, exactly? It’s theater outside of the mainstream, it’s experimental, alternative, independent performance; and it’s featured in its perfected embodiment at FronteraFest.

FronteraFest is a citywide, unjuried (meaning all admissions are impartially accepted) fring    ... read more

Take The EDGE Off!

If you missed out on the festivities at Edge Men’s Boutique’s shindig this past week, don’t fret— their event Take The Edge Off is to be held every third Thursday of the month.

As for a recap of January’s event, there was much to celebrate. Edge christened 2012 with featured brand Ksino. Ksino’s woven button-ups, classy caps, and casual two-button sports coats (which are an amazing find with their dark-line stitched lapels!) were a hit with the men… and their ladies!

With a bartendress at beck and call, visitors sipped on cocktails from W.L. Welles Whiskey, Toro de Lidia and Hornitos Tequilas, and Austin’s ever-favorite Cinco Vodka; or popped-a-top of a Stella Artois or Shiner beer, or even kept it classy with a glass or wine. The options seemingly cease    ... read more

grayDUCK Presents True Story

grayDUCK Gallery held an opening reception for “True Story” last Friday night. Wine and beer in hand, urbanites viewed the exhibit, aptly named for its insight into, as the gallery regards it, “the purity of perception.” Featuring artists Paul Beck, Allen Brewer, and Pat Snow, the contemporary art space transported guests into a very “East Village” scene with its stained concrete floors, aluminum ducts crossing overhead, and spotlighted, whitewashed walls.

Referencing artwork as the power he gives himself as a human being, Paul Beck’s portion of the exhibit stands out with its monochromatic tendency. The mixed media collection features symbols and icons, seemingly stamped amongst more ambiguous, unrecognizable people, shapes and objects. Having worked in the past as an animator with director Richard Linklater, and a writer/director for videos for the likes of Radiohead and the Black Eyed Peas, this local artist is no novice to a multi-media milieu.    ... read more

BabeHair

Shandi Nichelle has become a well-known local hair guru, enraptured in all things "Babe." Fittingly enough, as much of a babe as she happens to be, she's recently began a beauty bootcamp called BabeHair, featured in the January/February issue of Austin Lifestyle Magazine. This extends to her salon expertise and personal touches with a haircut she deems the "Babe Cut," which I must admit warrants the best body and shape for my difficult curly hair that I've ever had.

She whips out her final product while wearing a charming pink, paint-splattered apron, and does so without any hesitation or limitations. A razor here, some scissor here and a little nip and tuck there. She's like a master chef who needs no recipes, no rules, no oversight - but a master of the salon floor instead.

"Color melting" is becoming a popular hair color option, though not widely available. Luckily for the fellow babes in Austin, Shandi has mastered this art too, bringing women in who may be discontent with their current color whether it be dull, summer scorc    ... read more

Rental Retention

Ashley M. Halligan, AL's Managing Editor, also happens to be a Property Management Analyst at local company, Software Advice. It's Austin's second fastest growing company, which is why we mention it. So, when she's not writing colorful features centered around travel, spa, or fashion (or, ahem, having a beverage with her editor), she's researching the real estate and property management markets, learning about property management software and writing market-specific articles for Software Advice; all of which is good information for our Austin Lifestyle public. Yes, we know. She's a Jane-of-all-trades. And we're happy to have her. - Daniel Ramirez

Telling Your Story

They Say If You Don’t Use It, You Lose It…

I remember one holiday a few years back we had the whole family gathered in my grandmother’s Southern Louisiana living room, bellies heavy with the sweet juice of Creole gumbo. Na-Na put on a CD, and four generations of Cajuns were transported backward into the life of their deceased great-great-, great-, grandfather, and father. The retrospective was provided by a recording of “Poppy,” as we called him, recently having been modernized from a cassette tape. A family archivist had sat down with Poppy before his death in the early 1990’s, enabling us all, in that moment, to share his experiences of boyhood, adolescence, parenthood, and the vocally implicit state of senility in which he was recorded.

I will never forget the stories that Poppy told, and of the casualness that he reminisced with these tales that today, so unexpectedly, are of such value to my family and me. There is such an unrecognized strength in the preservation of stories    ... read more

Best Bites 2011

If you survived 2011, you know that it wasn't the easiest year. We all saw our share of struggles, of heartbreak and of challenge. But, even in a tough year for the economy and morale of our city, there were some incredible bright spots that we can hang our hat on as the perfect encouragement in starting a new year.

That being said, we bring you the best of 2011 inU bites, tunes and events (with a bonus movie selection or two):

Bites:

It is difficult to confine the amazing food we've experienced into a single year or a single list. Austin is rapidly becoming a bona fide food town, complete with Beard Award winners, Top Chef contestants and some of the best food the USA has to offer, according to experts like Anthony Bourdain and Curtis Stone (see our interview with him online here).

So, we did our best to keep the list to restaurants that opened in 2011, w    ... read more

Lucy's Fried Chicken

I have a confession: I LOVE Popeye's red beans and rice. Their depth of flavor is akin to a dreamy New Orleans, steeped in spice and chunks of pork. They are like a meat serving, all on their own. It's shameful, perhaps, but it is the symmetry of savory fat and protein that makes the beans second fiddle. They're frankly amazing.

And now I have found their better. I have seen the future of long-stewed legumes and it is the black eyed peas at Lucy's Fried Chicken. These are, in no way, for vegetarians. Replete with salt pork and a melange of spices tat a grandmother would marvel upon, it is a wonder that the black-eyed pea taste and texture is preserved - but there it is in an unassuming white cup.

Alas, that isn't the whole story of the newly-founded establishment. The menu evokes family-style dining and date night in    ... read more

Ho Ho Blo

Extravagant up-dos, flamboyant bouffants, and fancy coiffures rocked the hot pink runway this past Thursday at Qua bottle lounge on 4th Street. Blo Austin’s sponsored event was a hit not only with the salon’s modeling “hair cadets,” or clientele, but also with the fashion and hair show’s awed onlookers.

The runway presentation was at 8 pm sharp, with styling by Austin favorites Estilo, DuO, Plain Ivey Jane, Etcetera, etc., Y&I, & Kendra Scott. With hairstyles as big as Texas can get them, the event and show was put on in a style of altruism much worthy of its holiday theme— the sponsors raised money for the Austin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The venue, QUA is a nightclub by Yassine Enterprises, a locally based, nationally acclaimed entertainment and nightclub industry consultant firm. Qua has been included in the list of the Top 100 Nightclubs, proclaimed by Nightclub & Bar editorial.

A Truly Austin Tradition

About 15 years ago I first began noticing, as the holidays approached, a few of Austin’s notorious mountain cedar trees along loop 360 (note to recent transplants: calling it ‘Capital of Texas Highway’ immediately outs you as ‘not a local.’) adorned with holiday ornaments. Back then, local publications were quick to point out that this practice is considered littering, and is illegal.

The reaction over the ensuing years has been, and continues to be, classically Austin: “Whatever.”

It is a testament to Austinites’ willingness to think for themselves, and to distinguish Austin as quite unlike other Texas cities. And, it only seems to grow in popularity in worse economies. It’s as if the Whateverizers have become more intent than ever to spread holiday cheer publicly when the economic tide is out, the trail of lights is cancelled (uh-gain) and they realize people could really use a smile while they’re using 360 as a glorified parking lot at ru    ... read more

Tequila With Casa Dragones

You’ve treated tequila badly, and you know it. There’s no use lying about it now. We’ve all been bad to tequila, and it’s time to come clean. Tequila is a spiritual…er…spirit, and we’ve behaved sacrilegiously. It was a bit subtle at first. You didn’t accept tequila for who it was, but to hide your deep-seeded discrimination, you suggested little things. How about a make over? You shook salt all over your tequila and squeezed limes in it. When you still recognized the tequila, you asked a female friend if you could drink it off of her body. This created other problems for you.

The makeover was not enough, so you decided to dress the tequila in borrowed robes altogether, wrapping it up in sweet and sour mixes, coating it in some sorts of red and green mystery liquids, filling it with corn syrup and agave syrup, and once, in a pinch, maple syrup. You swirled the colors, turned the tequila into a slushy, and put mangoes in it. That’s right, I know all about your sordid mango affair.

Celebrate At Stack

Wednesday, November 16 was Austin Lifestyle Magazine’s celebration of our November/December 2011 issue. Thanks to all who came out and supported ALM at 4th Street’s newest foodie haven— Stack Burger Bar, the delectable host of the evening’s festivities.

At the bar (because it’s never a party without one) tenders served up complimentary specialty cocktails, followed by the same lip-smacking libations at the happiest of happy hour prices. Frozen margaritas, Sailor Jerry’s rum with fresh squeezed OJ, and grapefruit juice with gin were among the simpler of the beverages, with other exclusive cocktails including the low-cal margarita called the Jane Fonda, spiked with the flavors of fresh Serrano, jalapeño, and habanero peppers; and the Avocado Margarita, made with a blend of the pear-shaped fruit, Espolón Tequila and fresh squeezed lime juice, sweetened with agave nectar.

EAST bound

The 2011 East Austin Studio Tour, or E.A.S.T., has instigated a mass influx of pedestrian support to the city’s easternmost establishments. Venues played host to visitors of all sorts these past two weekends, a distinguishable feature of the persons being their support in the form of patronage.

Many artists and artisan shopkeepers have sought refuge east of Interstate-35 in the recent years, for rent is recognizably (though decreasingly) inexpensive and eastside identity is largely becoming legitimatized by way of a gentrified, uniquely patronized culture.

The identity of the area is established in a sense by as well as for its patrons, who range from “starving” artist-student types to young, professional families to veteran Austinites who just appreciate the comfortable change of scenery from better-established west, central, or south Austin. The attention these patrons and residents have brought east Austin has benefited its art scene greatly.

Kickin' It

On November 17, Kick Pleat on West 12th Street hosted the opening event for Nannie Inez, whose pop-up shop will reside inside the clothing store now through December 31st. Nannie Inez is a lifestyle and design collection put together by its founder Deeyn Rhodes and her husband. The “Good Living” line was launched November 1st, this being its first retail showing, which successfully kicked off its residence with a deejay, champagne, and an ice cream tasting by South Austin’s Lick- Honest Ice Creams.

Deeyn Rhodes says that the selection of products for Nannie Inez is “a very personal process.” Some of the featured designers, which are chosen with scrutiny from local to international realms, are Pigeon Toe Ceramics, Wolfum, August Morgan, and Hazel Nichols Prints, to name of a few. One of Rhodes’ favorites is British/Scottish designer Donna Wilson, whose products, she says, are “whimsical and fun, just very typical British.” Wilson’s home and interior goods make use of lot    ... read more

Lick - An Ice Cream Shop

Lick opened up just under a month ago in a little shop nestled among a small lot’s worth of local establishments, all set against the foreground of bustling South Lamar. The neighborhood artisan ice cream shop used organic milks and creams, local ingredients, sustainable practices, seasonal consideration, and Northeastern inspired tradition to mold its identity as an artisan dairy retailer, whose accessibility to the city’s patrons has been well received.

Lick Owner and Ice Cream Maker Anthony Sobotik defends (convincingly) ice cream flavors like Cilantro Lime, Breakfast Bacon, Spicy Coconut & Peanut, Goat Cheese with Thyme & Honey, Lone Star Au Lait, Grapefruit Ginger, Caramelized Carrots & Tarragon, Sweet Potato, and Sweet Cream Corn in the following conversation with Austin Lifestyle Magazine.

The Best Job Ever

Working for a magazine in Austin, Texas is a pretty decent gig. It means one gets to have days like these, where it’s from gala to gig, interview to dinner, all within the city limits of a town that is, at times, the envy of the live music world. Here, music comes at you from every direction, and has a flagrant disregard for the date and time. It is an intricate part of our DNA in Austin. Whether running by Stevie Ray in the morning or parking on Willie Nelson Boulevard at night, Austin is a music town. Bearing this in mind, to create a living soundtrack for a visitor’s stay in our fair town sounds like quite the challenge.

But it would make for a fun task.

Enter the W Hotel Austin, a solid presence in Austin, and one whose reputation for attention to detail preceded its arrival. If you’ve ever been in the hotel for a drink or a visit or a few lost hours at their AWAY Spa (check out our coverage of said spa, read more

Pony-tailed, tie-dye and sandals wearing David Lamb-Vines was all grins at the opening reception for his solo show The Fine-Art Lines: Between Genius and Madness last Saturday. Friends, family, and admirers, who reigned from all over Texas and beyond, enjoyed complimentary wine, beer, and sweet treats as they viewed the artist’s exhibition at VSA Texas’ new Access Gallery on Guadalupe Street and 37th.

VSA is the state’s non-profit organization that promotes creativity, accessibility to and education of the arts for those with disabilities. Its main goals are to foster art skills in both disabled children and adults, to provide enriching artistic experiences for, and to ensure proper, catered education to disabled persons. Their gallery, Access Gallery, similarly exists for the encouragement and advancement of such causes. The space that it offers its showing artists is a unique, intimate gallery with a traditional feel, modest yet secure in the heart of trendy Hyde Park.

Cinco Vodka Plays Sinatra

As I took my first sip of Cinco Vodka, there was something so familiar, natural, and comfortable about that flavor that it was as if I had been drinking it my entire life, or at least since I was three. This would prove to be partly true, but more on that later…

At Cinco’s tribute to Sinatra, an interesting nexus of the universe was ripped into the fabric of space and time which now makes it difficult to return to a lay person’s happy hour of wings, Jager shots, copious amounts of the lightest beer possible, and knee high white socks (not on baseball players), all excellent in their place, but which have formed an axis of evil that has taken over evening drinking on Earth, except perhaps in certain plantations of French Guyana where they still dress for dinner. When the Four Seasons Hotel, ultra premium vodka, Frank Sinatra, and The Lucky Strikes all come together in one event, what ensues is more magical than (insert your own Lord of the Rings or Voltron reference here so that I stay un-nerdy for one day).

MetroDog

Owners Alex Stowell and Ryan Adkins of metrodog, Austin’s high-end canine boutique, drew inspiration for the concept of their company from their own four-legged friends, Jack the pug and Sophie the Border Collie mix. The first time business owners maintain a focus on functionality, trendiness, and healthiness in all of their products, services, and events, including Mutts & Martinis.

Mutts & Martinis takes place the second Wednesday of every month. The event, hosted by metrodog, brings both people and their pets out for an evening of altruistic socializing at the shop. But a walk indoors and you inhale exactly why Bacon doesn't need to hide behind concept or marketing tricks to lure in a steady customer base (editor's note: we've been back at least five times since this place opened). 15 Days: Day 1

Exhausted: 15 days in Austin.

There are those in Austin who find some time away from the workday, away from the demands of the routine, and wonder what there is to do. They'll go through the motions of flipping through DVR programs or Netflix listings, deciding after a while that there's nothing new on the box. And there are more than a few who will then turn to movie listings and live music marquees for more choices, but may or may not want to venture out from the house. Austin, for all it has to offer, isn't as active as New York or Los Angeles...or is it?

Fifteen days ago, a journey began that plumbed the depths of all that Austin has to offer to combat the boredom of the everyday. Fro    ... read more

Austin Hearts ACL

Austin ♥s ACL

As all Austinites are aware, Austin City Limits Musical Festival took place at Zilker Park last weekend. Whether or not in attendance, the impact of the annual three-day affair on the city is evident— traffic blockades, various deals and specials, “musician types” galore, overflowing restaurants and bars. The impact of the festival can be, truthfully, a strain on the energy and patience of the locals.

There are, however, benefits to this superfluity of pedestrians. An influx of “foreign” monies, i.e. monies from the U.S.A.’s East and West coasts, most notably, provides an atmospheric resurgence. Business    ... read more

Katy B Sets It Off

To say that she's following in the footsteps of Joss Stone and Adele would be misleading. Katy B is making a name all her own in the music world, leading the charge of British dubstep's popularity in the US with her accessible Brit-pop sound, laid over heavy dance beats. Dubstep, as a style of music, is making enough of a movement in the United States and in Austin proper to have a significant presence at SXSW. To kick off W Hotel Austin's first ACL Festival, she was recently showcased in an incredible event that showed the best that the singer and the W Hotel had to offer.

Gucci Galore- Fall 2011

In the true flavor and flair of Saks Fifth Avenue, Cosmopolitan cocktails and glasses of White Wine were served at their Gucci Handbag Private Trunk Show this Tuesday evening. Featuring the Fall 2011 Collection, Saks played host to Gucci’s line of handbags that, while sticking to its traditional look, was refreshingly unexpected.

Cherry Gloss, a near-burgundy shade of rose, was a shade produced exclusively for Saks. The color is available in the wallet, bag, and bamboo handbag styles. Not only is the color’s exclusivity of retailer appealing, but its exclusivity in the realm of colors is noteworthy as well. This season’s accessories’ looks are littered with conventionality in    ... read more

Vintage Fun In The Sun

Vintage Inspired Fun in the Sun: Austin Fashion Week 2011

As the grass wilts and the trees hunger for rain, Austin Fashion Week 2011 is in full bloom. A bloom, in fact, personified by the full, flirty skirts of SavannahRed’s models as they strutted their stuff at Lovely Austin.

Lovely, a self-called Couture Consignment shop, played host to a plenty of well-dressed guests on Wednesday evening, both those on and off the catwalk. Along with some folksy musical entertainment by Miss Izzy Cox, drinks and snacks were provided. Guests mingled and chatted, interrupting their socializations for some quick shopping. Either fervently paddling their way through the rack of sale items or detachedly eye-sifting through shelves of vintage purses, there was no doubt that the goodies at the shop were a fit for the trendy crowd that had gathered via RSVP or as passers-by.

Among the stores goodies were a pair of Yves Saint Laurent heels. At an unbelievable and irresistible twenty-five do    ... read more

Eastern Brunch

Zandunga Mexican Bistro

Austin’s burgeoning East Side is no secret these days. With the exposure and rapid perfection of its boutique culinary and libations scene, this area of town deserves all of the attention it has been receiving.

Let this grab your attention, for starters: thick as taffy, almost, yet stretchable in a more delicate, frailer sense, the melted Oaxaca cheese of Zadunga Mexican Bistro’s queso fundido seeps off of the serving spoon, leaving behind sautéed mushrooms and roasted poblano peppers atop a browned surface of queso in the too-hot-to-touch bowl. Uniquely sweet, in addition to its inherent savoriness, the queso is adorned with huitlacoche, a highly demanded, edible, corn-derived fungus, sometimes referred to as the “Mexican Truffle”.  Zandunga’s “interior” approach to Mexican queso is too rich to take on solo, which the dish’s three accompanying tortillas reveal.

Aligning The Chakras

Aligning the Chakras

Lion’s breath. HHHHHHH, as it could be transcribed. The wide-mouthed exhalation of stalest breath, the dismissal of tensions. Tongue stuck far out, curled toward the chin, letting the breath glide out through your body.

Lion’s breath, a warming technique that prepares the body for tension-free practice of what’s to come, can precede either a yoga class or the day or evening that follows.

Considering how hectic daily and nightly life can be when domiciled in Austin, it is no wonder Austinites have hopped aboard the trendy bandwagon of physical fitness in a modern form- in the form of yoga. Studios have flourished in this fitness savvy community predominantly within the last ten years, seeking residence in all areas of the city. Different studios play host to different types of styles of practice, and each is worth exploring. As one of the worldR    ... read more

LUSH Gives Good Hair

LUSH is known for the frothy fun it brings to bathtubs and showers, but we get serious when it comes to giving good hair. All of our hair care products have a trained trichologist behind them, our founder Mark Constantine. Trichology is the scientific study of the hair and scalp, which includes the identification, diagnosis and treatment of hair and scalp conditions. LUSH is interested in TREATING problems, not just masking them - although we do like to mask the hair with nutritious ingredients from time to time. In an effort to help you manage your mane, we’ve created three limited edition haircare gifts launching in LUSH stores and www.LUSH.com on July 18th for the most    ... read more

Rest In Peace, Good Knight

At Austin Lifestyle, we are no strangers to the beauty and taste that can be poured into a great cocktail. Recently, we featured a number of such cocktails and their creators and perfectors in an issue dedicated to the Contraband Comeback. Featured and celebrated among the bars and talents we covered was one of the new pillars of the resurgent cocktail culture in Austin, The Good Knight. Succeeding where most attempts to create a speakeasy feel, The Good Knight served unassuming food that had graduated well beyond bar fare. They had one of the most respectable jukeboxes in the city.  And all of this was just a showcase for their incredible contribution to the cocktail culture in Austin.

Far removed from the beer bars and the easy mixes of rum and coke or vodka and soda, the bartenders at The Good Knight took pride in every drink they offered, taking care and time to craft something that was well-balanced, rather than a play for quick turnaround and easy tips. Ordering a Cartel alone was a clinic in how balance is achieved in a cocktail. With a hint of black pepper and some agave nectar, what could easily have been a too-sweet margarita tr    ... read more

Austin Is Now A LUSH

Most people don’t know that LUSH products are handmade with a trained Trichologist touch. If you guessed this was a scalp specialist and not an extinct dinosaur, then you are correct! Before Mark Constantine launched LUSH, he had a successful career working at a UK salon identifying and treating scalp conditions. Because of his extensive knowledge of scalp health, Mark ensures that every LUSH hair product address the hair at every level, from the hair growing inside the follicle to the ends that have been growing for over 5 years. A dry and flakey scalp means dull hair that breaks easily, so check out these products to prevent any future problems:

ZU Hits The Summer

Å»U Vodka—an expertly fashioned bison grass flavored vodka of the Polish tradition—surged onto the spirit scene and swept imbibers off their feet.  Fall is the perfect time to celebrate the anniversary of the introduction of this storied libation to the United States; its round, grassy and herbal undertones with hints of almond and vanilla make for a flavor profile that is complementary to the season and truly unique.

The folks at ZU were kind enough to offer some late summer/early fall recipes involving ZU. Keep your eyes out for our coverage of a very special ZU event, to be featured in our August/September issue, and be sure to enjoy these cocktails to cool you off.

Summer Solstice

On June 21st an astronomical event will occur as the sun's position in the sky reaches its southernmost or northernmost extreme.  To celebrate the summer's "longest day of the year" (solstices only occur twice per year; once during the summer and once in the winter), Eddie V's Edgewater Grille shares its signature Lemon Parmesan Sole recipe from Executive Chef Chris Bauer. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

8 oz. sole filet
3 oz. of marinated red and gold tomatoes, tossed with balsamic vinegar, chives, basil, and olive oil
2 oz. of garlic butter sauce
2 teaspoons of grated parmesan
Several sprigs of parsley

Method:

    • Season sole with salt and pepper, dip in flour, then milk and then parmesan crumbs
    • Sautee filet side down first, until golden brown and very crisp
    • Turn, and sauté other side until golden brown and very crisp

SXSW Finale

Saving The Best For Last: SXSW 2011

Recovery took forever, ladies and gentlemen. But the reason why was well worth it.  The last days of SXSW were made amazing by a number of unbelievable parties hosted by incredible people. As Austin Lifestyle, we were granted exclusive access to the SPIN party, Samsung Focus Presents Perez Hilton's "One Night In Austin,” and VEVO’s PowerStation, in addition to all of the SXSW sponsored events one could handle or imagine.

We began at Rachael Ray’s Feedback, hosted as it has been for the past two years at Stubb’s. The food line was the length of Stubb’s backyard, but well worth the wait, as were the delicious beverages, including Blue Moon and Deep Eddy Sweet Tea Vodka.  The day began with the winner of the WHOOZNXT contest absolutely shredding the interior, while Bob Schneider warmed up his new songs outside on the main stage. And while the band, “The Features,” were awesome, they didn’t quite have the draw that hometown favorite Bob did. Unleashing his n    ... read more

SXSW Last Two Days

The Last Two Days Of SXSW 2011

Knowing what lay ahead, we stopped in, before a scheduled party, for the best coffee in Austin.  I know it’s a bold statement; and Houndstooth and Thunderbird lay claim to a throne long ruled by Austin Java and Jo’s..but a hot dog joint is my caffeine king. Frank provided the cortado, and the coffee provided the kick.  I can only marvel at how amazing it is to have the Conference/Music in the heart of a town so rich with culture, life, food, and drink.

SXSW plays host to many official parties, exposing the best of regional music from around the world to the SXSW audience. Thus, one finds the mix of one of Austin’s Irish pubs with the trendiest of Irish music, and offering a full Irish breakfast.  Featuring Oh Ruin and Pierce Turner while we awaited our bangers, beans, and eggs, the music was good accompaniment to the BD Riley’s vibe, and foretold of further amazing tunes from the lik    ... read more

The Last Days Of SXSW 2011

The Last Days Of SXSW 2011

Needless to say, things went into hyperdrive for the last two days of SXSW 2011.  Without knowing where our last half day left off, it is important to note that our attendance at officially SXSW venues had been lacking.  Not to worry, as we made up for it with what might be the most exhausting trip through town, but blissfully so.  We hustled to Rusty Spurs to catch sophomore phenom, Lenka, whose SXSW emergence was clear last year, and whose sound has improved significantly, as she launches into her next album, the aptly titled, “Two.”  She’s singing to a packed house, and her hits from last year aren’t lost on the capacity crowd.  But it’s only a prelude.

This is the place, the way, the time that we wanted to see Fitz & The Tantrums, and they did anything but disappoint, fueling every sort of power in the room through their antics and their exuberance.  BY the time we’re crouching low for the final chorus of their hit, “Moneygrabber,” the entire crowd is airborne to the beat, signaling that, indeed, this little band that could h    ... read more

SXSW Day 7
SXSW Day 7: Part 1

The lack of rest begins to take it’s toll some time around the 7th day.  Call it the need to take a day of rest, perhaps, but it was slow going to get out of bed this morning in time for the KGSR Music Lounge at the Four Seasons.  However, once this was accomplished, there was no reason to attack the day.  As we have said before, the KGSR presence at SXSW is one of the best things that a local can attend and enjoy with very little effort, which pays off in incredible dividends.  We were lucky enough, thanks to Michelle, the manager of the events team, to get a seat 8 feet from the stage.  We missed Suzanna Choffel, but made it in time for the new ingénue from Nashvill    ... read more

SXSW Day 5
 SXSW Day 5

Is it day 5 already?  We’ve managed to move the hours at random, so that 7am seems like noon. At this point, SXSW 2011 is more than in swing, it is a full-fledged movement, capturing everyone downtown in its spell as it moves toward its final days.  Venues are now blanketing the city, and if there is a spare piece of land, it is commandeered by stage hands and construction companies.  The crossover audience, from Interactive/Film and Music attendees, has landed, making their presence known with their conversation topics, from web identity to the best headphones for daily use.

But bringing all the conversations to a screeching halt was Blake Mycoskie’s keynote address.  Mycoskie, the founder of the successful business and philanthropic endeavor known as TOMs shoes, spoke with a spellbinding charisma that was as informative as it was inspiring. Showing through his success as well as his experiences that giving can benefit any business, and is the responsibility of all citizens of earth, he weaved a tapestry of interrelated goals    ... read more

SXSW Day 6
SXSW Day 6

With music OFFICIALLY kicking off today, it means an early start, as the KGSR music lounge begins bright and early today.  Now, we’re not so dedicated that we arrived in time for Malford Milligan at 6:30am (SXSW does take its toll), but we made it in time for Fitz and The Tantrums to raise the somewhat calm lineup’s soothing effect to a party level. Their energy is infectious as it was the night before, and way too large for the tiny lobby.  Brett Dennen finally got the crowd into singing with “Sidney (I’ll come running)”, and Kat Edmonson sent us all off with a timeless voice, all to benefit the Shivers Cancer Center.  They are stationed there through Saturday, with headliners in spades, so if you have a chance, wake up before work and get something to eat along with a great sampling of music from around the world (but plenty of local music, to boot).

Armed with new found energy, we headed north to the IFC Crossroads House to check in...and ran into Brett Dennen, performing a much longer set than the KGSR lounge, to the happiness of the 40 people allowed into the    ... read more

SXSW Day 4

SXSW Day 4

Ok, please forgive us as we’ve lost complete track of time and space.  Day 3 was by far the perfect example of how SXSW can make the impossible seem trivial.  We began the day with the Trade Show, which was impressive in scope, with vendors and innovators of every shape and color, promoting the “next big thing” and giving away food/drink/shirts to entice people to take a look at their wares.  From there, it was on to the Keynote by geek dreamgirl, Felicia Day, who gave a perfect perspective on how the world interacts with fans, how we interact with those who critique us; and expressed creativity and its influence on our world. She followed her dream from a simple gamer’s web series to now contracts with two major television studi    ... read more

SXSW Day 3
 SXSW DAY 3

Day Three

Wow.  This all happens very fast.  As you must do during SXSW, you have to hold to your planned schedule very lightly.  Thanks to a late rise, the panels were all but missed this morning, in favor of roaming about on South Congress and West 4th, easily funneling through crowds of people, all who have lanyards on their necks.  SXSW has clearly taken over the city, and the free offerings are plentiful.  Local favorite Torchy’s has a line next to a solar-powered carousel on Colorado, where there are publicly accessible charging stations for your mobile devices, all powered by solar panels throughout the lot.  It’s a great idea that’s drawing lounging crowds from every direction.  It’s more and more of a party vibe downtown, and it threatens to keep growing and growing.

Another local company, Gowalla, is the talk of the conference, as their iPhone app is the best way not only to check in and find friends in any given loca    ... read more

SXSW Day 2

 SXSW Day 2

Day two can be summed up quite simply - CROWDS.  With the overlap of SXSWinteractive and SXSWfilm, the number of people in the midst of downtown is astounding. But our fair city is well-equipped to handle the influx with tons of venues and enough star power to light downtown like it was Vegas or Hollywood itself.

First things first.  The Kutcher has landed and ALM was there.  Bringing Demi along with him, Ashton Kutcher did an interview from the IFC Crossroads house, and said in the interview that he planned on staying in town and “causing some trouble” while he is here.  Keep your eyes on our twitter feed @lifestyleaustin to have up to the moment information about celebrities and other happenings at SXSW2011. We broke the sighting and interview of Danny DeVito and Carla Gugino right on 4th street, talking about the rise of independent film in the world, and particularly with the support o Austin and SXSW.

But the stars aren’t the only attraction.  Head down to West 4th and you can’t avoid the myriad parties.  With a badge, you could fid yourself at the frog design party that too    ... read more

SXSW Day 1

SXSW DAY 1

Well it is finally here.  And for the first time since it was born, the first day of SXSW means an infinite amount more.  This year, word on the street says that interactive has overtaken music for most registrations.  Judging by the day one crowds, it's clear this is the case.

So get in with me.

Day one is crowded downtown and after a session that took place well north of downtown, we passed by two free food offerings and made our way to the convention center.  There are pop up venues sponsored by every media outlet, all hocking their wares and alcohol in a very confined space.  With the success of the Interactive conference, the intelligentsia of the world and the cool of our fair town converge.  But we would be remiss to ignore the biggest draw of this week, as the Film portion of the conference attracts four world premieres.

So we were in the Paramount to watch Jake Gyllenhall and Duncan Jones' new sci-f    ... read more

Art Night Austin

Saturday night, art enthusiasts and collectors gallery-hopped around Austin to view new and exciting exhibitions for the third annual Art Night Austin. Limousines chauffeured attendees to view works at the various venues, filled with promising collections and installations. There were DJs spinning at all the locations along with refreshments and chef-prepared fare from fine restaurants including La Condesa, Kenichi and Parkside. It was a fabulous preview of what Austin’s art spaces will be gracing our city with this spring.

AMOA

Some of the art at the Austin Museum of Art was alive: Artists Jesus Benavente and Jennifer Remenchik live in a two-level structure in the museum in attempt to explore social barriers and stretch the boundaries of contemporary art. Onlookers saw Benavente prepare a salad while Remenchik sat in a chair and surfing on her macbook. Another highlight was a collection of Ian Ingram’s charcoal and wax portraits. They are simply striking and not to be missed.

A Night In CASAblanca

Lillian and Jeanne's Story - CASAblanca 2011 from CASA of Travis County on Vimeo.

Even Austin’s finest jewels and genes couldn’t outshine Saturday night’s base posture: the neglect and abuse of Travis County’s bright future. Some of the city’s deepest pockets flocked to the Four Seasons Hotel on February 19 for the annual CASAblanca Gala, held by CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Travis County. Saturday’s agenda: raise over $100,000 for the nonprofit and generate more voices for the children left without one. Mission accomplished. And in heels, yet.

From Cole Haan to Caché, pinstripes to ombré, tables were filled true to fashionable Austin form. Peacock centerpieces complimented an array of starched white lapels that would bring a tear to even Bogey’s eye (perhaps because they were paired with ostrich kicks). Bergman would’ve been proud to join the crowd of beaded lace and sheer jersey.  The deplorable number of “Posh Bobs” however would have surely put the Golden Age starlet off her spring roll salad appetiz    ... read more

By definition, “Torrid” means extreme heat, sultry. That’s the look that buyers and designers of Torrid, the clothing retail store, had in mind when they launched back in 2001. Contrary to what Hollywood and fashion magazines want you to think, I’ve always heard that the average woman in America is a size 12. Torrid exists to supply hot and sultry fashion for the “plus sized” gal (sizes 12-26). No longer can you only find the sexy little black dress in a size 4 or 6. Torrid boasts an array of chic dresses, in addition to: tops, jeans, swimwear, accessories, jewelry, shoes, intimates and even maternity clothes.

Located in both Lakeline Mall and Barton Springs Mall, Austin ladies can find very hip styles at Torrid. Some of my favorite dress styles include:  the Olive Military Shirt Dress ($74) and the Black & White Polka Dot with Rose Pocket Dress (on sale for $50).

Whether it’s a Girl’s Night Out or spending some time with a “special someone,” every lady needs the perfect excuse to    ... read more

Evie Evan Sends Products to Troops in Afghanistan

Austin, TX, February 15, 2011 – Earlier this month, Evie Evan sent 1,000 of its Soldier ScrubsTM to troops in Afghanistan. Working with a charity, Solider Socks, Evie Evan was able to provide its low-water solution to troops overseas. These efforts were part of the Evie Evan CaresTM program, which looks for different ways to work with charitable organizations.

Supporting the troops is a cause that is near and dear to the hearts of the Evie Evan owners, Ivonne Ruggles and Michelle Perez. Michelle’s brother-in-law, Jeff Wells, served eight years in the Air Force and flew on many humanitarian missions around the world. Jeff often told Ivonne and Michelle about the skin care needs of the soldiers. “We needed items that required very little water, as we wanted to preserve our water for drinking. We also needed packaging that was rugged and would hold up in our packs,” Jeff commented.

“We are very excited to work with Solider Socks, to manufacture and package    ... read more

Parkside Cafe' Austin

Parkside Café in Austin, Texas: Sitting Pretty on Famed 6th Street

The last time I had darkened the doors of 301 East Sixth Street in Austin (TX), it was New Year’s Eve of 1998. The eatery, then a steakhouse, saw me ring in the New Year by finding a coat button (yes, a button) floating in my cup of cold soup. The joint in question, as it happened, was a questionable joint.

Flash forward a decade or so, and, my how times have changed. Now the home of Parkside Café (since 2008), the dining experience was much better upon my return. The spread was supreme, the setting festive and, impressively, the food was served hot and sans accessories.

Sandwiched between venerable bars and nightclubs-come-lately, Parkside Cafe may very well boast the only cloth tablecloths on the block, but the award-winning eatery still manages to maintain the party theme that is Sixth Street’s hallmark. Loud but not pushy. Nice but not pretentious. A fun-filled calm amidst a brewing storm. And, where else can you get dish towels as table napkins?

We arrived and were chaperoned to a window booth that allowed us to keep the feel of the night—observing the Sixth Street scene and the people watching of those carousing down the party lane. Th    ... read more

Max's Wine Dive

Dive into Max’s Wine Dive

It’s a delicious and exciting blend of the comfort food you grew up on fused with gourmet culinary experimentation to create a unique dining experience. Max’s Wine Dive is a Texas-based restaurant with locations in Austin, Houston and San Antonio. In Austin, the location is strategically placed in the hip area of 2nd Street (and San Jacinto), snuggled between the Austin Convention Center and Congress Avenue.   When you’re looking for a unique dining option where you don’t have to fuss with gourmet’s pomp and circumstance, but you do want all the taste sensation, Max’s is a great choice. Max’s is built on the concept of combining real food with a fun twist and pairing that with a delicious wine selection.

For example, try several of their “small plates” with a fruity sauvignon blanc such as “Republic”. I highly recommend getting your taste buds o    ... read more

Sip & Savor: Day 3 Frank

SIP & SAVOR - DAY 3:

FRANKLY SPEAKING

What you see before you is the best deal that the morning ever provided, since it first provided light for free. It's THAT good. Day 3 (and really 4, as well) saw the Accidental Epicurean taking the morning commute by way of Frank (4th and Colorado). Their Sip & Savor Austin deals are amazing, and the one that called to me most as a lover of all things caffeinated (see our article on tea, the other caffeine, in the Jan/Feb issue), was their $5 biscuit and coffee. If you've never been to Frank, they pride themselves on being purveyors of all things pork, and their breakfast offerings live up to that billing. But what you may not be aware of is that they are one of the best coffeeshops in all of Austin, serving Intelligentsia Coffee in cone drips. Go in, order a cup, and watch as someone literally crafts your beverage. With artisan coffee being charged a premium at ot    ... read more

Sip & Savor Austin, Day 2

Sip & Savor Austin, Day 2

So we're late getting this up, but I'll blame the holiday ("Oh, Holiday, and the best one of the year!") for the slow start.  For day two, I found myself at Cuatro's not once, but twice in the same day. My dearest girl called me and needed rescue from what she could only articulate as "one of those days."  You know the ones, when everything has caved in on you. It was like that. Cue the movie montage, where the computer gets turned off, the door gets closed, and the keys find the ignition, and in moments, I was picking her up and taking her to Cuatros to sit and watch NCAA basketball and eat her version of comfort food - namely, fried pickles.  Now, we'll get into the matter of fried pickle supremacy someday, but for this occasion, what was needed was fresh air, sunlight, great snacks, and mindless sports, all of which are constantly in large supply at the campus bar. Emergency fried goods consumed, we took off and said goodbye to the bad day for the price of $4, including beer (Monday happy hour at Cuatros can't be beat). Color me surprised that, when I checked my Sip/Savor schedule for the week, Cuatros was on the docket. I returned to the same folks who helped cure the "mean reds" earlier and ordered from their pairings menu, which had just been completed. Chipotle. Chicken. Tacos. The fact that they were anywhere near the Sip & Savor menu resolved any decision-making issues. Paired with a new favorite, the Ranger IPA, these have the abi    ... read more

Sip & Savor Day 1: Max's Wine Dive

Sip & Savor Austin, Day 1

We begin on a rainy Sunday night, when soup or a bowl of chili sound like the best way to fend off the gloom. Not quite what's on offer for the eve, but I'll return to that idea soon enough.  Max's, on Second and San Jacinto, shines a light and welcomes you in with selections from a jukebox and the warm smells of a bevy of choices. Their Sip & Savor Austin offering is what we're here to explore, so my partners in crime and I take a quick glance at an appetizer and are lured in by the "Nacho Mama's Salmon," a salmon-tartare and Texas nacho hybrid that goes by way of Japan. The garlic aioli is not playing games and adds an ideal compliment to the salmon, avocado, and spices that adorn each "chip". But, on to the Sip & Savor part of our eve. Max's offers half-price burgers as their Sip & Savor Austin special, and that is no small offer. When asked for our dinner orders, she plays it safe and gets a basic cheeseburger, while my order is a challenge to the chef.  With everything that could possibly be added to a Max's Kobe burger, I give the chef carte blanche to do what he will. I see him smile in the open kitchen and when the burger (and wildly underrated fries) arrives, I'm more than pleasantly surprised. Atop a perfectly cooked patty of succulent Kobe beef is cheese, some bacon, and the normal fixings that any burger warrants. Lettuce, tomato, and a red onion slice are all there, sitting next to the jewel of the burger. A bowl of Max's Te    ... read more

Haddington's

The British have landed! Quietly, with nary a soul knowing, outside their friends and family, Haddington's opened last night for the first time. Equal parts curiosity and adventure, my friends and I showed up at 8pm to survey what they had. Needless to say, it was quite the surprise from former Mulberry founders, Zack Northcutt & Michael Polombo, the British influence of both the fare and the pub's ambience (to call it anything but a pub is almost to insult the dark wood, brass joints, and long bars that were, no doubt, painstakingly decided upon) were abundantly clear. Touring is like a walk through an Irish pub, with nooks and other rooms, impressive in such a small space. The front windows overlook 6th and continue the ruse that you are, in fact, in London. A glance at the wine list will let you know that you're anywhere but a normal pub, however. The wine list sprawled, which was an exquisite surprise, as were the specialty cocktails on offer. From foie-infused Sazerac (if memory serves), to the more obscure prohibition cocktails that are finally reclaiming the bar scene, this is the perfect fusion of Olde and new. By the time the menu called to us, we were already impressed. And here is where the decision went a little south for me, but was a win for the others in my party. On the menu is a decadent use of meat and fat, known as British meatballs. Cooked in caulfat, which, while sounding atrocious, is making a significant resurgence thanks to the Food Network and Jamie Oliver in particular, the m    ... read more

Second Bar + Kitchen
I'm here to gush. Yes, though I do my best to remain objective and reserved in my reviews, I am going to lose my mind for just a moment. I am going to dare to recall the deliciousness that is contained in three words at Second Bar Kitchen. It sounds funny, but hear this: if you do not try the Buffalo Fried Pickles on offer at Second, you have missed what is possibly the best snack/app/inventive dish in greater Austin. Over two nights, I went twice to Second, and could not resist the incredible pull that these had on me the first time I'd visited. Why no one in the land of fried pickles had thought of this before is beyond me, but the stack of salty spicy crispy is more than enough reason to drop into Second. Beyond that, you need to try and get Brian or Liz as your purveyor of spirits. They know how to make a great cocktail with impeccable balance, and the pisco sour is a great example. Too, they carry the finest spirits, and Maker's 46 was easy to order. The second night at Second, New Year's Eve, was when the menu was put through its traces, and the chicken, a simple dish, simply prepared, took the prize. Served over a side dish that should be available every second of every day, this is the mark of a great kitchen, that they can prepare the simplest and most ubiquitous of ingredients with precision and excellence. I left very little to send to the busboys, and my company thoroughly enjoyed her pizza, made with a similar amount of authenticity, simplicity, and excellence. I'd use words to continue to describe the decor (pristine modern), or the waitstaff (attention    ... read more

A Legend Is Leaving
If you've driven down Sixth Street this past week, you have likely noticed a line somewhere around its intersection with Rio Grande.  The line varies in size, depending on the hour, but is fairly consistent in presence.  It doesn't move fast; and regardless of its membership, is an alarmingly recent addition to an already crowded West 6th district.  But rather than heralding the arrival of the hottest new restaurant or bar on the block, rather than some exclusive access point for concert tickets (or some die-hard ploy to get bottle service and a private booth at the chic nightclub of the moment), this is a line for an older establishment...one that is as storied as Austin's rise to cultural prominence.

Katz's deli, famous for its claim that it "NEVER KLOSES,"  is officially shutting its doors in a matter of days.  After over 30 years on the Sixth Street scene, stretching back to the days of "dirty Sixth," owner Mark Katz has decided to close the restaurant to pay off back taxes and debts that go back to an older bankruptcy.  Unable to find traction in an exponentially competitive restaurant market in Austin that has also seen downtown real estate costs skyrocket, the restaurant that was (almost) as famous as its owner will soon be silent.

While many would claim that the food at Katz's wasn't authentic New York deli material, or that the costs/portion size/quality weren't up to a standard, the lines tell a different story.  The lines tall of a dedicated following that found Ka    ... read more

An Odd Christmas Playlist
Every year, someone asks me to put together a Christmas CD for some reason or another. Sometimes, it's a party mix. Sometimes, someone needs a bit of cheering up. Sometimes, it's just because all the old songs have grown stale and they want something they haven't heard before. So this year, I thought I'd make it easy. Here's a 14 song playlist of my odd favorites for the season. As is customary with me, there are some melancholy tunes in here, alongside some covers, and right before some great mood-makers.
-Daniel

THE LIST FOR 2010

1) "Christmas Lights" - Coldplay : If you know me at all, you know I don't listen to Coldplay anymore. It's been two years and I can't touch more than a remix with Jay-Z and that's only because it's been on the workout/run mix for 2-3 years. But they kept me on their mailing list, even after I disavowed myself of them (ask and I'll tell you). And this year, they came in with a killer Christmas tune. I understand that they speak more to the nostalgia than to "the reason for the season" for many blurkers (web-lurkers who also manage to be straight-drinking haterade), but if you hear the metaphor about the "lights" and the encouragement that they "keep shining on". You'll know. You know more than a few Christmas Lights, yourself, I'm certain. They make the season mean more to you...and here's to them never leaving. So, I can now listen to two Coldplay songs again. Thanks, Chris Martin.

A Storyteller Named Ed

A Storyteller Named Ed

Night One Of The Austin Film Festival

To all of the ladies who surround my life, including some of my co-workers at Austin Lifestyle Magazine ('natch), I am now one of your crew.  Consider me a fan of Edward Burns, star of "Saving Private Ryan," "She's The One," a host of other films, and more importantly, director of the quintessential indie classic "The Brothers McMullen."  On day one of the Austin Film Festival, Burns hosted a double feature of his directorial offerings, including "The Brothers McMullen" and the premiere of his latest film, "Nice Guy Johnny."  Undoubtedly, after hearing his story, meeting him, or simply listening to his voice (again, this commentary is channeling my dear co-workers), many will soon refer to Burns as 'Nice Guy Ed,' but that does both the man and the film a bit of disservice.  Both are worthy of far more accolade.

Hopdoddy

Hopdoddy...excuse me wha?

Do not get hung up on the odd name.  When repeating it to someone, you might get "hotbody" or "hot toddy" or even "poptart" (true story).  But forget the name.  This new resident of South Congress, taking over the space formerly inhabited by Cissi's Market, much to our lament, Hopdoddy is the right place to go and hang out over the best burger and fries while enjoying a perfectly matched local brew.  The decor features Austin photos of Austin icons and wood tables that seem as at home here as they would at Icenhauer's (see previous post).  The bar runs the length of the room's center and features the freshly squeezed juices that go into their cocktails (YES!).  But make no mistakes, the burger is the thing here, and their fresh ingredients, seemingly infinite options, and dedication to making their own bread makes for something unseen in Austin since the dawn of P. Terry's.  The burgers made of beef are exactly how a mouthwatering imagination envisions.  Stacked high with the ingredients of your choice (we chose poblanos, bacon, and jack cheese), and including red leaf lettuce, onion, and fresh tomatoes, these burgers deserve a picture we didn't have time for and could not do proper justice to.  And they do not stop with the amazingness.  They offer not only a veggie burger, accurately named a Janis Joplin...but an ahi tuna burger, topped with pickled ginger and adorned with fresh sprouts.  We really can't say enough about this new offering, other than to visit and tell us    ... read more

New Rainey Street

The New Rainey Street

In the wake of the economy, many developments in our fair town had to be put on the back burner, for all intents and purposes.  Condominium zoning that once paved the way for an influx of residents and businesses in the downtown area gave way to properties for sale without developmental plans.  Take, for example, the dilapidated homes that were on Rainey Street near I-35.  Over a year ago, some progress was made in renovating a few homes in the neighborhood and converting them into well-apportioned bars.  Lustre Pearl, the cornerstone of this development, gave birth to its sister bar with a dressier feel, Clive.  But then, development paused.  At long last, it has resumed...and in fine form.  Bar 96 opened its doors less than a month ago, right across from Lustre Pearl.  Just now getting off the ground, this place is the definition of "laid back."  If the 'Pearl is calm and carefree, where you're invited to wear sandals and dress down, then Bar 96 is where you can put your feet up on the furniture.  Cut from the same cloth, but adorned with flat screen televisions to accommodate the sports-hungry nature of Austin, there is little that is pretentious about Bar 96.  Decks wrap entirely around the converted house, and the backyard has a trailer operated by an executive chef from Uchi, serving the most adventurous and delicious trailer-fare.  read more

Ambitious Austinites under 25

UTexas Foodies

I’ve never heard so much discussion about the spicy garnish known as curry. Pretty much my entire grasp of Asian cuisine is provided by whatever dishes are served at the local Pei Wei. But my dining companions Ryan Meister and Sierra Shear know the sauce like the back of their hand, and relish in the full breadth of its delectability.  Really no shocker that the two of them were members of the new UTexas Foodies organization that had one simple, yet ultimately satisfying purpose: eat out at vibrant restaurants, and have a sensational experience in the process.

ACL Last Word

The Last Word on ACL Fest

Frank Turner, oh Frank Turner.  While I said it of Ruby Jane, I have to reiterate that you need to FIND Frank Turner.  Above all things, this man screams (in look, song, and attitude) the highest virtue of Austin.  He's authentic.  He also has a tattoo of our great state on his arm, as if to extoll that virtue.  Turner is such an everyman that you can't help but root for the gentleman from Winchester.  His singalong opening song, "Eulogy" had everyone exclaiming "that's the only eulogy I need."  By the time he rips into "I Still Believe," we're all involved.  He managed to chastise a not-yet-ready-for-rowdy crowd.  "I played in Germany and they don't even speak English and they were louder than you!"  Leave it to Frank to discover the other two things Austinites love more than authenticity...music and competition.  By the end of his set, when he's testifying about what all of the ACL goers are secretly screaming already, I doubt a soul can now resist Frank Turner.  "I won't sit down.  And I won't shut up.  And most of all I will not grow up!"  We couldn't agree more, Frank.

Worried to constant questioning by a report of a lackluster aftershow at Emo's the night before, I perched myself at the front left of the Austin Ventures stage for the set by Dawes.  The chief worry was that their normally inviting harmonies would be obscured by the day and the need to overcome the din of sound from other stages.  Consider their show the night before a presea    ... read more

ACL Day 2 Full

ACL FEST

Day Two

I had to remind myself that it's a marathon, not a sprint...and with that in mind, I skipped the earliest bands and camped out in front of the ZYNC stage.

I won't hide my fanaticism about newcomer, Lissie.  It wouldn't stay hidden, even if I tried.  The young woman from the midwest began her set with "Wedding Bells" during Saturday's early hours.  Drawing more than a modest crowd, she reined in her powerful voice like a warmup to the day.  Standing front and center, a crowd quickly developed behind just in time to witness Lissie hit the gas with "Worried About," the end of which had people beginning to jump in place.  The most amazing bass/drums/vocals came from the same person, all at the same time from maestro Louis Kella, who held the audience enthralled for some time before Lissie took the attention back with "Bully."  Talking about how glad she was to return, the guitar intro to "Cuckoo" was all the crowd needed as her gravely rasp serves the song well with an up tempo that only ceases (along with the noise from the rest of the festival, un-coincidentally) when she begins the most haunting song experienced at the fest, eventually arriving at the chorus to "Everywhere I Go."  The band from the main stage sponsored by Budweiser, The Very Best, begins their set and cuts into Lissie's spell when she and the band unload "In Sleep" and "Little Lovin'" which manage the impossible and overpower the sound from the bigger stage across the way.  By the time we get to the now wid    ... read more

ACL Day Three

ACL Day Three

So, this year's festival was so amazing, it was like a punch in the face.  Like a delicious chocolate brownie punched you in the face.  A lot to take, but utterly amazing.  (In case you're wondering, I have the bruise on my right eye to prove it...email me and I'll give you details)

Much like the William Miller I invoked on Friday, come Sunday, I'm the wide-eyed writer, still a little too infatuated with the entire process, but trying to keep the truth in focus (through heat and crowd and Olivia's amazing chicken that our woman on the scene, Deb, recommended).  Luckily, the Austin Music fates cooked up a particularly beautiful day, complete with (can it be?!?!) cloud cover.  Sunday being the final day and a lazy start, I showed up painfully early to catch the phenom that had been taking over stages all weekend, Ruby Jane.  Normally, I like to start my ACL Sunday in the gospel tent, with church and all.  But this time, I decided that "counter program" was the watchword of the weekend, and so I headed to Ruby Jane's BMI performance.

What I ended up with...was CHURCH.  Word apparently got out all weekend, and the stage was crowded like a last-act-for-the-stage show.  The buzz-girl of Blues Traveler's set certainly drew    ... read more

The highlight of Day 3 was the grand finale. EAGLES...a night to remember with the stage glowing against the downtown skyline... Grandmothers and pre-teens stood in front of me and they all knew the words to every Eagles hit.  The entire crowd participated in one giant sing along and Walsh, Henley, Frey and Schmidt covered the gamut singing almost every Eagles hit the crowd wanted (one notable exception was Tequila Sunrise) from I can't Tell you Why to Witchy Woman to Peaceful Easy Feeling to Take it to the Limit to Hotel California to Lying Eyes to Seems to Me to In the Long Run to Life in the Fast Lane to Dirty Laundry to Life's Been Good to Me to Take it Easy and wrapping with a masterful Desperado.  If you missed it all I can say is well you missed one of the great concerts of a lifetime.

The only glitch I can report was that Norah Jones was finishing her wonderful set with Lone Star and the Eagles began before she finished which seemed rather rude, but she was a trooper and finished with a flair.  A    ... read more

ACL Day 2 BRIEF

Day 2 In Review In Brief

Ok, so when ALM gets invited to an exclusive afterparty on the way home from ACL Fest, we have to go.  But we'll blog everything TONIGHT from yesterday and today.  We have interviews with Two Door Cinema Club and LISSIE (we like her, in case you didn't know).  Here's a taste of the exhausting day two!

Two Door Cinema Club was the  hands down best show of the day, for the few who braved the beating sun to dance in a happy pit at the Austin Ventures stage.  Until the following unexpectedly happened:

Who glammed up my Grace Potter?  Approaching the AMD stage in midday, Potter shimmers from afar, clad in a sequined number that is Tina Turner length, which she even quips she didn't fully consider the danger of.  "Don't look at my panties," she instructs, reservedly still employing the gritty voice and jumps that are an echo of her full capacity.  She is keeping her inner animal back until about 3/4 through the set when the Grace that everyone witnessed emerge at this year's SXSW...picks up a flying V guitar and it is, as someone near me shouts, "on."  She flies across the stage, and suddenly has stolen the soul of Tina Turner, hair going forward and back at the keyboard.  Her stage presence is unparalleled by any at the fest so far as she breaks out a line that could be self-descriptive.  "She's baking cookies then she'll burn your town."  Ms. Potter has certainly lit the torch when the most unexpected thing happ    ... read more

ACL all about people
Day 2 ACL 2010

Hot and dusty...great people watching even in a crowd of 75000.  Most often overheard comments: Wish they would limit ticket sales to 60000 and eliminate one stage so your could hear each group without bleed.  All in all a good day for music lovers.
Hits:
Lissie: She looks like a waif but you should hear her sing.  Who knew such a voice could emminate from such a small body?
Gaslight Anthem: Hit the stage rocking and never stopped.
Mayer Haythorne and the County. True to hometown Detroit roots and influneces of Motown and Stax it was perfect cool R&B for a hot day.  Their cover of What a Fool Believes had the crowd swooning.
Local Natives:Definately the best show of the afternoon and maybe of the day.
Crowd Pleasers: Broken Bells, Monsters of Folk, Kinky and Gogol Bordello
Misses:
Pete Yorn: Yawn
The Honda Stage: Something was off with the sound both times I was there ... a shame for the fans of Manchester Orchestra and the Tender Trap who voiced their disappointment
Shopping and food note: Shop Local...look for the HOPE booth behind the Austin Ventures stage for great local goods and food...not as crowded as the food vendors.
Transportation note:  I rode my bike yesterday    ... read more

ACL Day 1

Austin Lifestyle Magazine's

ACL Coverage

I’m flying high over Austin, Texas with America’s hottest bands…and we’re all about to lose our minds.  Well, it isn’t exactly “Almost Famous,”  but it sure does feel like it.  I have been a professional fan of live music in Austin for over 7 years, now.  That means every SXSW or headliner show that has graced our city has been fair game.  I walk in, am a part of the crowd, enjoy the music I’ve come to hear and generally go home with a smile on my face and a tune in my hum.  The same goes for Austin City Limits Music Festival.  You could call me a fanboy and I wouldn’t take offense.  I celebrate lineup day (usually in May/June), pour over the schedule for hours, and plan an attack that will get me the most bands I love without missing bands I will soon come to love.  I coughed dust with the best of them, was yards away from the    ... read more

Falling In Love Again with ACL

Day 1 2010 ACL Festival.

I will admit that I was leary of ACL...last year was truly horrific-the weather was terrible and I ended up with a terrible case of H1N1 but Friday enjoying the absolutely perfect weather and the sights and sounds of the festival made me fall in love with this great city and with ACL.
Observations, Hits, Misses and put on your holiday gift list:
75,000 attendees are definately too many and definately makes a difference...the number of tickets sold should be reconsidered by organizers. Also the bleed from stage to stage was bad especially if you were trying to catch the performances at the Austin Ventures stage. That  being said the Friday lineup was incredible.  Several people were put off by the large crowds at the two main stages and that resulted in finding new groups and music at the alternate and less crowded stages. In general tourists and townies alike were happy and friendly and there was plenty of room for back and forth to catch several groups.
Hits:
JJ Grey and  Mofro: Hard rocking southern blues, gutsy vocals from lead singer JJ and the guitar player was cooking when his finger slide flew off and he had to go into the crowd to retrieve it.
Blues Traveler: Crowd favorite (and one of mine) Unique and earthy cover of Radiohead's Creep with a big infusion of blues but the real highight was Austin's own Ruby Jane who joined them onst    ... read more

RULE Austin Film Festival

How To Rule The 2010 Austin Film Festival

In the event that you were unaware, in the wake of Cannes, Toronto, and even Austin's own Fantastic Fest, one of the best film festivals in the world has been going on for the past 16 years, right in our fair city.  The Austin Film Festival boasts a staggering lineup of premiere movies, A-list stars, and parties.  But, for someone who isn't in the know, it can prove challenging to navigate.  Last year, ALM and Sarah Sharp, a recording artist who calls Austin home, took on the fest and came back with all of the tips you need to know to not only survive the insanity that is AFF, but to simply rule.

1) You don't need a pass or a badge.
Much like other festivals in Austin, there is a LOT of activity that happens away from the "action".  Single film passes are on sale for most major releases, and are available up to the moment the opening credits roll.  If there is a particular film you're anxious to see, such as James Franco's "127 Hours" or Natalie Portman and Darren Arnofsky's "Black Swan",    ... read more

I'm so psyched about ALM's new digital issue.  It's been a blast working on it with Leslie from Build Texas Media.  We started this ezine off with a video that has great shots of Austin life.  It's Ryan Harkrider's "Stargazing" video.  Ryan is the writer of Austin's first official them song "Nobody Ever Wants to Leave."  Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tyt9NB8XbRc.

Best Trailer In Austin
So the great debate in Austin has shifted.  Instead of inspiring fistfights over who has the best queso (more to come on that soon), the buzz in Austin is all about the trailers.  From a niche market that catered to the "overserved" along East Sixth Street, the market that once only held Best Wurst, Roppolo's, and Torchy's Tacos in the debate, the Austin area has literally exploded to include nearly every area of town and nearly every type of cuisine.  MMMMpanadas covers the South American jones, while El Naranjo hits a little closer to home with their signature interior Mexican food.  If you're into a sinful fried good, there's Gourdough's for dessert (or for a meal, if you dare to include bacon), or if you want a proper meal, head to The Mighty Cone for an incredible experience you could normally only get at Hudson's On The Bend.  So, as we enjoy doing, what are your favorite five?  Are the oldest the best, or is there an upstart dark horse candidate that stole your heart?  We'll likely get the Accidental Epicurian to investigate in-depth.  But, until the, chime in, Austin...

Here are our top five:
- Torchy's Tacos - Nothing beats fried avocado or their inconceivable queso.  But if anything does, it has to be the Crossroads.  (Secret: Get all of it on corn tortillas.  It's a mythical experience.)
- Flip Happy Crepes -  There is a reason th    ... read more
